“Because I said so”

No, not the movie starring Mandy Moore and Diane Keaton, which I assume is terrible.

Of course, I’m talking about the verbal whiplash your parents delivered anytime you asked why, why not, or how come.

Why can’t I get on the roof and jump into the pool?

How come the dog gets to poop outside and I don’t?

Why don’t we ever get to go to the fictional, underwater city of Atlantis?

“Because I said so” was dished out by our moms, unfortunately, before we could even grasp logic or had the will to counteract a point in an argument. How dare our moms take advantage of our small, undeveloped, elementary brains. They used our natural weaknesses to win their verbal battles – and it was probably for the best.
